Understanding Fine Lines and Wrinkles

As we age, we begin to notice the formation of lines and wrinkles that occur with facial expression and movement. These are called dynamic lines.

Continued and repeated use of facial muscles combined with ageing factors such as volume loss, loss of subcutaneous fat, changes to facial bones, and loss and damage to collagen and elastin within the skin, these dynamic lines eventually form static lines, which become present at rest.

Some procedures for fine lines and wrinkles work by reducing activity in overactive facial muscles, which can soften the appearance of lines. Suitability and outcomes vary between individuals.

What are some treatment options for fine lines and wrinkles?

FAQs

What does the treatment involve?

At Youth Lab, a full consultation is required for every new client. Your consultation will include clinical photography to ensure your progress is monitored, a skin assessment and a full facial assessment where your area of concerns and expectations will be discussed. Your doctor or nurse will then tailor a treatment plan specifically for you.
If treatment proceeds, it is performed in a clinical setting using sterile, single-use equipment. Only medical professionals can perform this procedure.

Treatments for fine lines and wrinkles generally lasts 10-15 minutes and involves the treatment administered based on your unique facial anatomy to achieve natural results.

Some discomfort may be involved. Some clients report a stinging sensation and discomfort which is easily reduced by applying an ice pack or numbing cream to the area.

Results may become evident after a few days, with the maximal effect at 2 weeks. A follow-up appointment is recommended for first-time treatments to ensure you are satisfied with your results and to assess the need for any dosage adjustments. This will ensure ongoing treatments are performed with the correct dose for your individual needs. No treatment will be performed prior to the 2 week follow-up, this treatment takes 10-14 days for the full effect.

Complete aftercare instructions are provided following each appointment.

How long do results last?

Generally, most people find the results last up to 3-4 months.

At this time, the muscles gradually return to their pre-treatment state. Factors such as dose used, the natural muscle bulk as well clinical treatment expectations will impact the duration of results.

Your practitioner will tailor dosing and approach to your individual needs and goals.
It is important to note that the treated area does not return to normal activity overnight. The muscles start to contract again, generally 4-6 weeks post-treatment. Repeated treatment may be recommended to help maintain results. Some people find the effect may last longer over time, although this varies. Tailored dosing is essential and it may take a few treatments to determine the right dose based on your desired results.

Other factors that could impact longevity include, metabolism, those who exercise at high intensity and concurrent illness.

What happens after treatment?

Following treatment, normal activities can be resumed. You may experience swelling, redness and bruising. You will be provided with full aftercare instructions.
There are some general precautions that should be taken to reduce the risks of these side effects. These include:

  • Ice can be applied to reduce discomfort, swelling and bruising
  • Avoid any strenuous activity or heat inducing activities for 12 hours
  • Do not apply makeup to the treated area for 12 hours
  • Do not rub or massage the affected area for 24 hours
  • Do not lie down flat for 4 hours post-treatment, or do strenuous exercise for the first 24 hours
  • Do not have any facial treatments such as laser or peels for 2 weeks post-treatment.

What are the risks of anti-wrinkle injection treatment?
