BBL device
BBL treatments are similar to lasers in that light is used to target a certain part of the skin.

BBL use light filters with a broad spectrum of light to enable the light to treat multiple different skin conditions.

At Youth Lab we use BBL technology over the older, traditional IPL platforms. BBL is an updated and advanced form of IPL with filters that enable safe and effective treatment of signs associated with ageing, pigmentation, freckles, sunspots as well as facial flushing, redness, rosacea and capillaries.

The Sciton BBL platform is a more accurate and effective treatment method compared with IPL and delivers far superior results in less treatment sessions.

The Sciton BBL has also been proven to be an age defying treatment which can ‘flip the genetic switch’ and result in younger, clearer and brighter looking skin with continued regular use. This amazing treatment is called the Forever Young BBL.

We recommend a full course of corrective BBL treatments to treat a particular skin concern and to treat skin until it is functioning optimally, followed by maintenance Forever Young BBL treatments to maintain the quality of the skin and encourage collagen production.

BBL treatment is non-invasive with minimal down time so you can receive quick and comfortable treatments to fit in with your busy schedule.

BBL before and after with grey filter
Compared with traditional IPL the treatment is faster, more comfortable and safer due to increased practitioner control over the settings and treatment protocols.

BBL can be used to treat a number of different skin conditions:

BBL before and after
BBL directs pulsed light energy which is converted to heat energy when it reaches the top layers of skin, gently heating the tissue.

This heat energy is then absorbed by certain targets (the light is attracted to different colours in the skin) such as fine broken blood vessels which cause redness and melanin which causes pigmentation and brown spots.

The light then damages the target, eliminating it from the skin and restoring the skin to its natural healthy condition. As a result the skin appears more refined, with even colour and texture giving a more youthful appearance.

A number of treatment sessions are required as it can take time for the damaged pigmentation, discolouration  and veins to slowly disappear while they are absorbed by the body. Treatment sessions are variable and will be guided by the  individual patient response and condition of the skin prior to treatment.

FAQs

What does the treatment involve?

Prior to the treatment being performed, a full consultation with your doctor, nurse or dermal therapist will ensure that BBL is the right treatment for your particular concerns. Once a treatment plan has been determined your eyes will be protected with safety goggles or glasses. The treatment will feel like a warm snap of an elastic band as the light is absorbed by certain areas. No pain relief is required however topical local anaesthesia may be applied to more sensitive areas.

The procedure will take from 10 to 30 minutes depending on the size of the area that is being treated and the indication for the procedure. When BBL is combined with other treatments such as laser or skin tightening the treatment time can be longer.

The procedure is gentle and low risk when performed by our highly trained practitioners in a medical facility. The BBL technology is so advanced that the filers can also be used on higher risk skin types (darker skin) where traditional IPL methods have previously been unable to treat due to the risk of adverse effects such as burns and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Occasionally you will be prescribed a lightening cream or skin preparation cream for 2-4 weeks prior to the treatment to ensure your skin is in optimal condition. For the best long term results, preparation is key. Sun exposure, tanning and fake tan is to be avoided for a minimum of 2 weeks prior to treatment. Your therapist will explain the steps needed to be taken pre- and post-treatment to ensure the best outcome.

How long do results last?

The number of treatments varies for each individual. A personalised treatment plan will be provided however this can change at any time depending on your response to the treatment. A combination with other treatment methods can also be used to further enhance your results.

Generally the number of treatments needed for rejuvenation and treatment of pigmentation, freckles and sun spots can vary especially with ongoing exposure to the sun. Lightening will occur after the first treatment but up to 3-4 treatments may be needed for stubborn pigmentation.

Maintenance treatments every 6 to 12 months are needed to ensure long lasting results. For redness and veins 4-6 treatments may be needed, again depending on the severity of the condition. Many patients get very satisfactory results from only 1-2 treatments.

Once the skin has been corrected we always recommend maintaining the results with Forever Young BBL every 3 months.

What happens after my treatment?

Following the treatment there will be redness and warmth to the skin however many can return to work and their normal activities straight away. Makeup can be applied but it is advised to avoid any excess heat or heavy exercise and sun exposure is to be avoided.

Redness may last a few hours. Within a few days any pigmented spots will darken and eventually flake off and fade. This process can take up to 14 days however makeup can be used to cover this. The immediate results will be smoother more refined skin with a visible reduction in fine lines, pores and an improvement in tone and colour.

Results are dependent on the initial condition of the skin, the number of treatments performed, the areas treated and the patients compliance with after care and sun avoidance.

Full aftercare instructions will be provided following the treatment.

What are the risks of treatment?

BBL treatment is low risk and due to the advanced technology is now much safer than IPL on higher risk skin types. It is important to note that IPL treatments are not regulated in Australia with cheap and dangerous machines being purchased from overseas and used in beauty salons.

Youth Lab only used scientifically proven medical devices and technologies and you can be assured you will be in safe hands with expert clinicians.

The general down time from BBL treatment is minimal. This may include redness and some localised swelling which will decrease in a few days. The skin may also appear patchy especially if pigmentation and sun damage has been treated, this is why committing to a course of treatments is essential as not all of the skin may be treated fully with each session.

Some people respond more than others but this is normal. Rarer side effects are burns and blistering due to settings being too high and in very rare cases post inflammatory hyper or hypopigmentation which is skin color changes that can last for many months. This can be treated but is understandably distressing. This is usually use to underlying hormonal triggers of pigmentation or skin types that respond by an inflammatory process to the heat.

Attending a clinic where there is medical supervision from doctors ensures the safety of your treatment and the effective treatment of any adverse events.
