The purpose of this page is to explain the post-treatment procedures for the Intensif and Genius Radiofrequency Microneedling treatment, immediately after the treatment in the clinic and at home.
What to expect after your treatment
The Genius and Intensif Radiofrequency Microneedling produces a fractional controlled injury to parts of the skin, therefore most of the tissue around the affected tissue remains intact. This fractional method contributes to the shortening of the downtime following the procedure. This intentional tissue damage can be in the form of ablation of tissue on the surface of the skin or coagulated tissue in the dermis and results in apoptosis (organised cell death). The body clears the damaged tissue by producing new, younger-looking tissue.
Individual response can vary after a radiofrequency treatment.
Risks, Complications and Expected Downtime.
- Erythema (redness) and sensitivity in the area of treatment is expected to be strongly visible for several hours to several days and decreases with time, some mild pinkness can be visible for some patients for several weeks.
- Oedema (swelling) of the skin in the treated area is expected. Severity of swelling will vary from patient to patient and can range from minimal to severe. Those prone asthma, allergies, increased sensitivities or taking certain medications may be more likely to experience significant swelling post treatment. Swelling is temporary and will subside within 1-7days.
- Urticaria (itching) or hive-like appearance is also associated with the thermal energy affecting the surrounding skin. Antihistamines daily are recommended to manage.
- Micro crusting, gridding or stamping will appear and can last days to several weeks according to the areas treated. This will initially look like little dots (sometimes brown or black) on the skin or have the texture of sandpaper. Slower shedding of micro crusts, gridding or sandpaper texture is noted in areas around the eyes, neck and decolletage but will subside with time.
- Purpura (bruising) is seen when a blood vessel bursts which can occur but is usually rare.
- Skin breakouts and purging of underlying congestion is common in those with oily or acne-prone skin. This does not require further treatment and will normalize 7-14 days post treatment.
- A blister can form up to 48 hours after treatment. An antibiotic cream or ointment can be used. Other short term effects include bruising, superficial crusting, and discomfort.
- Hyperpigmentation (browning) and hypopigmentation (lightening) have not been noted with the Intensif and Genius treatment however this is always a possibility with any energy-based treatment. Hyperpigmentation can be minimised by correct pre-treatment preparation and strict aftercare adherence. This is more common in certain skin types and in Fitzpatrick skin types IV-V is almost certain to occur after energy based treatments. This is temporary and improved with correct aftercare.
- Infection is not usual after treatment, however, herpes simplex virus infections around the mouth can occur following treatments. This applies to both individuals with a past history of the virus or individuals with no known history. Should any kind of infection occur, your clinician must be notified to prescribe appropriate medical care.
- Allergic reactions resulting from treatment are uncommon. Some persons may have a hive-like appearance in the treated area as discussed above. Systemic reactions are rare
- Vigilant care must be taken to avoid sun exposure (tanning beds included) before and after the treatments to reduce the risk of colour change. Sunscreen should be applied at all times.
Immediate aftercare – what to do at home.
- Limited activity to reduce excessive perspiration is advised as well as no hot tubs, steam, sauna, or excessively hot shower use for 24-48 hours.
- Cool compresses may be used for comfort and the treated area should be cared for delicately for at least 12-24 hours.
- Mineral makeup may be worn after 24 hours.
- No use of exfoliants, AHA or BHA and Retinol or Retin-A (Vitamin A) containing products (these are commonly exfoliating cleansers, toners, scrubs, serums, or masks) for 7-14 days post treatment.
- The use of the YL Aftercare kit is required for optimal healing, this will be applied immediately after the treatment and you ma re apply every 2-3 hours or as needed. Continue daily use for up to 14 days. Alternatively, Mild gentle cleansers, hyaluronic acid/hydrating or healing serums, moisturizer and SPF can be used daily (for product recommendations, click here).
- Patients who may be prone to sensitivity, hayfever or allergies are encouraged to continue use of the YL Aftercare for up to 4 weeks until the skin returns to normal.
- The use of SPF 30 or above applied daily is mandatory post treatment for 4 weeks. Reapplication is advised after 4-5 hours. The controlled damage in the epidermal layer reduces the skin’s natural defense mechanisms and may cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and as a result, the treated area is more prone to sunburn and pigmentation change. Long Term commitment to sun safe practices and daily SPF 30 or above use is highly recommended for long term skin health and result maintenance.
- Antihistamines and Anti Inflammatories may be used to assist in reducing and managing swelling, urticaria or itching post treatment.
- Mild Exfoliation is suggested 7-14 days post treatment as advised by your practitioner to assist with the removal of micro crusting, exfoliation is to be gentle and not vigorous
Treatment follow-up
The number of treatments required will vary from client to client and your practitioner will personalize a treatment plan based on the level of improvement you desire.
Although one treatment is beneficial, a series of treatments is required for results. The recommended treatment course is 3-6 treatments every 8 weeks. After the initial treatment series, periodic maintenance may be advised (depending upon condition/s treated). Other treatment modalities will also be incorporated.
Individual results will vary and depend on your skin type and skin concern.
Adherence to recommended skincare and product advice will ensure optimal results and maintenance of the skin. Failure to commit to active home skincare will limit results significantly.
Smokers will generally experience poorer healing and suboptimal results so cessation is recommended.

Following the fractional treatments, mild to moderate erythema (redness) will be seen on the skin for up to 24-48 hours.
Oedema (swelling) of the skin may occur and can be minimised by keeping the area upright. This is usually more prominent on day 2-3 post-treatment.
Adding cool compress, antihistamines and avoiding exertion is recommended for swelling. Swelling is normal and can vary between individuals, especially those prone to swelling. It is often worse around the eyes.
Urticaria (itching) often occurs as the old skin is shed and the new skin is being formed. Please avoid scratching or picking. This can lead to infection and scarring.
A sunburn sensation in the area treated is also normal and expected. Small crusts may also appear, for up to a week, depending on the type of treatment and the parameters used.
It is common for those with acne-prone skin or underlying congestion to have a ‘purging’ response following treatment. This is normal and no intervention is required.
Immediate aftercare – what to do at home
- Avoid the use of active ingredients, scented lotions or soaps, deodorants, exfoliant creams (Retin-A, glycolic/salicylic and alpha-hydroxy acids), acne creams or gels, and aggressive scrubbing for a minimum of 5 days post-treatment.
- Soothing creams (such as Youth Lab Calm Balm) may be applied to soothe the skin and to reduce redness. Apply immediately after the treatment and every 2-3 hours or as needed. We recommend the YL Skin Aftercare products for 5 days post-treatment.
- Make sure to keep the face clean, especially on the day of the treatment. Clients may wash their face gently and avoid using make-up or beauty products on the day of treatment.
- Avoid activities that may infect the skin such as swimming or intensive physical activity on the day of treatment.
- Do not rub the skin for 5-7 day following the treatment.
- You may use mineral make up on the next day following the treatment.
- If crusts appear following the treatment, do not peel or scratch them. Be gentle and treat the area with care. Picking and scratching of the skin can lead to infection, scarring and pigment changes. It is imperative that you treat the skin with care.
- Men must avoid shaving until the small crusts peel off.
- If the skin is broken or a blister appears, apply an antibiotic ointment and contact the clinic immediately. Keep the affected area moist and avoid direct sunlight.
- Antihistamines can be used to treat any swelling.
- Strictly avoid any sun exposure to the treated area for a minimum of 14 days after the procedure. The controlled damage in the epidermal layer reduces the skin’s natural defence mechanisms and may cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and as a result, the treated area is more prone to sunburn and pigmentation change.
- Keep the area covered and use a sunblock with a protection factor of 50+. Delayed blistering secondary to sun exposure has been noted up to 72 hours post-treatment. Avoid any excessive heat such as steam, as this may also stimulate an inflammatory response.
