Introduction to Allumera - light activated photodynamic therapy

Youth Lab are proud to be one of the first clinics in Australia to offer Allumera. The first in a new class of photodynamic therapy for cosmetic procedures, Allumera is a light activated topical cream designed to improve the overall appearance of the skin. It is the perfect treatment for those wanting more dramatic results than a superficial chemical peel, but do not want the added downtime of a more invasive procedure.

Allumera offers proven results to fine lines, elasticity, skin tone, skin texture, discolouration and pore size.

What is photodynamic therapy (PDT)?

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a treatment that uses a photosensitising agent, followed by a particular kind of light. When photosensitisers are exposed to specific wavelengths of light, they respond in a certain way that has an effect on surrounding skin cells.

Allumera is an ideal treatment for those who are looking for:

  • A non-invasive procedure with little to no downtime

  • A more youthful appearance

  • Increasing skin radiance and glow

  • A procedure that’s ideal for an event preparation

  • Long Lasting Results.

Allumera has been clinically proven to:

  • Minimise the appearance of pores

  • Revitalise skin for a  younger looking, clearer complexion

  • Reduce the appearance of fine lines and crow’s feet

  • Improve skin firmness, creating a more supple appearance

  • Improve overall skin texture

The treatment is safe and suitable for many indications such as:

  • Ageing Skin

  • Photodamage

  • Thickened skin

  • Hyperpigmentation and sun damage

  • Lacklustre skin

  • Open or Enlarged Pores

  • Fine lines and Wrinkles

After your consultation our dermal therapist will thoroughly cleanse your skin before applying the Allumera cream. Once applied, it is left to absorb into the skin over a 60 minute period. You can relax in our relaxation room and enjoy a herbal tea and catch up on some work or reading.

Once the cream has absorbed over 60 minutes, the procedure area is gently cleansed, and you are placed under the Healite LED light source utilising Red light for 10-20 minutes. The procedure is relaxing and no discomfort is felt at all.

Each procedure is expected to take around 60-90 minutes so allow enough time for this.

The procedure is generally comfortable with minimal down time. Some patients may experience a mild to moderate prickling, stinging or burning sensation during and immediately after the procedure. In other cases mild redness and/or swelling may occur which generally disappears within 2-3 days. Peeling is not expected but some may feel their skin becomes slightly dry.

It is extremely important to avoid direct sun exposure for 2 days (ideally longer) after the procedure. This is non-negotiable. Strict use of SPF, hats and protective clothing is needed, even when walking to and from the car. It is preferred that patients stay indoors as much as possible in the first few days. Strict UV protection in the following weeks will also ensure optimal results and long term effects of the treatment.

There are certain contraindications to treatment such as active skin cancer, active infections in the treated area, broken skin such as cuts or burns, visible sun burn, certain allergies and light sensitive conditions. This treatment cannot be done in pregnant or breast feeding women as it has not been studied in these groups.

We recommend 3 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart for optimal results. Following an initial treatment course Allumera can be performed every 6-12 months.
