Next up in the “meet team YL” series we interview our newest member Danae who is our Cosmetic Registered Nurse and comes to us with a wealth of experience, skill and knowledge.
Q) What inspired you to become a cosmetic nurse?
My obsession with cosmetic nursing began in 2003 after watching a little too much nip/tuck as a tween. I was addicted to shows like Botched and became completely mesmerized by the work of Plastic Surgeons, Cosmetic Physicians and Cosmetic Nurses. There was something so special about the ways these people could help someone in such a vulnerable state and time within their lives. Being ‘that’ person responsible for completely changing someone’s life for the better, it really resonated with me.
Over the past 9 years, I have worked really hard within the industry to slowly advance my skills and qualifications. I began my studies back in 2010 with a Diploma of Beauty Therapy. In 2012 I enrolled in an Advanced Diploma of Cosmetic Dermal Science and finally, in 2017 I completed my Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
During this time I have worked within both surgical and non-surgical Cosmetic settings as a Dermal Therapist, Cosmetic Perioperative Nurse and Cosmetic Nurse Injector. Over the past 9 years, although I have worked extremely hard, I have gained such a vast amount of experience and knowledge and for that I am extremely grateful.
Now that I have found my little nursing niche, I am still continuously inspired on a daily basis by many of the amazing and successful women with in the industry. I am in constant admiration of their positivity, drive, skill and success - Through out my journey, I have met some really amazing people and I am fortunate enough to be surrounded by a really amazing support network, these girls are my superstars!
“I am a big advocate of the natural look and truly believe that less is more when it comes to injectables.”
Q) What is your approach to cosmetic injectables?
My approach to cosmetic injectables is simple, listen to the patient, understand their expectations and proceed from there. I am a big advocate of the natural look and truly believe that less is more when it comes to injectables.
Each and every beautiful person I meet within the Youth Lab Clinic is unique, I feel it is important to embrace this uniqueness during facial assessment and treatment. Personally, I find uniqueness to be such a beautiful thing and aim only to enhance individual beauty in a natural way.
Everyone has a different perception of ‘ideal beauty’ and as a Cosmetic Nurse it is my responsibility to assess, educate and guide to give an ideal aesthetic outcome.
I do not approach injectables as a ‘one size fits all’ and like to make both short and long term treatment plans, allowing each person to achieve their cosmetic goals in a comfortable and manageable time frame - Whilst always allowing enough time for a friendly chat, laugh and catch up in between :)
Q) What do you love most about being a cosmetic nurse?
When the wrinkle relaxer kicks in for a conservative, first timer and they return to the clinic for their two week follow up. I always tell them they will be back for more… and sure enough...
I also adore meeting new people and seeing the beautiful people and faces of Perth. Some are my little ‘repeat offenders’ who I see on a regular basis who are pre-booked months in advance and would never let anything get in the way of their routine injectable appointment. For others, it may potentially be their first time entering a Cosmetic Clinic and I know this can feel super exciting for some, or super daunting for others.
Either way, old (not in appearance) or new, I just love seeing and meeting all of Perth’s beautiful people.
Q) What is your favourite injectable concern to treat and why?
I love treating mid face volume loss with dermal filler. I find it so satisfying to see that beautiful ogee curve profile post treatment. Patient education is so important in this area too. Many people do not realise the correlation between mid face volume loss and the negative effect this area has on the remaining aesthetic of the face.
Almost every person I see in clinic could potentially benefit from a little volume added to their cheek area. Its gives an instant result and is extremely satisfying to see those cheekbones pop post treatment. Especially when a little is added to the highest point of the lateral cheek bone.
“lips are definitely not a ‘one size fits all’.
Generally I find each person to have such a unique lip size, shape and volume, so its important to assess each set individually and plan the injecting technique from there.”
Q) What is your favourite treatment to perform and why?
Lips and Cheeks - especially lips. It’s always fun to be a little creative with your method of injecting within this area. I have been fortunate enough to attend a few lip filler Masterclasses in the past. I find continuous learning extremely beneficial. You will always learn something new and pick up a little tip or trick along the way.
Again, lips are definitely not a ‘one size fits all’. Generally I find each person to have such a unique lip size, shape and volume, so its important to assess each set individually and plan the injecting technique from there.
Q) What products are you using on your skin at the moment?
It’s safe to say that I am a hoarder of skin care products!
I find my skincare routine can vary, as does my skin. At the moment I am going through an oily phase - My skin has always been on the oily side, so for me, it’s about managing my breakouts and keeping them under control. My current go-to products are:
Ultra MD Ultimate Brightening Cleanser - A foaming gel cleanser, which is great for removing make up and has added skin lightening ingredients, so it’s also perfect for keeping pigmentation away.
Ultra MD Brightening Serum - A potent chemical exfoliant and skin lightening serum, which works on skin texture, pigmentation and luminosity.
Ultraceuticals SPF 50+ - A daily moisturiser and SPF all in the one. Ultraceuticals have an SPF for every skin type, even acne skins. All of their SPF’s are extremely lightweight, non-greasy and smell amazing!
Ultra MD Ultimate Refining Serum - This products contains a serious dose of pure Retinol, supported by Vitamin C and works by increasing cellular turn-over, assisting with removal of those old, dull skin cells.
Vitamin A also aids in the regulation of overactive sebaceous glands, so it’s a great product to keep my oil glands under control. The additional benefit of this product includes collagen stimulation which helps to plump up any fine lines or wrinkles.
PCA Skin Hyaluronic Acid Boosting Serum - This is my one luxe skincare product, it feels absolutely divine on the skin. This product contains Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid and focus’ on hydrating and plumping both the superficial and deeper layers of the skin. I love this product because it adds hydration without causing breakouts.
Beauty Chef Collagen Inner Beauty Boost - I have very recently started on this one but is something that I have been extremely excited to try for a while now. It is an organic, bio-fermented probiotic which I add to my water every day to boost collagen and skin radiance. It tastes amazing and since starting this program - my daily water intake has doubled.
When you consider what makes a person appear youthful, it is not entirely a smooth, plump face. It’s that youthful glow and even skin tone.
Cosmeceutical grade Skincare deserves a little more credit.
Q) What treatments have you had done this year? How can we get skin just like yours?
I am a walking advertisement for Hydrafacial MD. I absolutely love Hydrafacials! I tell every single patient to try a HydraFacial MD, at least once. Generally after their first treatment, they are converted. HydraFacials then become their their monthly go-to skin maintenance treatments. The HydraFacial Glow is real and it is amazing!
My second go-to treatment is BBL. However, expect a little downtime such as redness, darkening of pigment, micro-crusting and possibly swelling. I generally try to book in at least 2 - 3x per year. It works wonders on evening out skin tone, removing any skin discolouration issues, including diffused redness, pigmentation, sun damage, capillaries, scarring and can even help to reduce breakouts.
One thing I have not yet tried BUT am really excited to try is the Dermamelan treatment. The down time looks fairly intense, but the results I have seen have been nothing short of amazing!
I obviously try to keep up with my routine injectables as best as possible, given that I am usually treating everyone else instead. I try to aim for an injectable treatment every 3 or so months. The areas I tend to treat on myself are frown, forehead, crows feet and chin.
Q) What is your favourite thing to do outside of work?
I am such a simple, boring person. I wish I had this crazy alter ego and life, but unfortunately my routine outside of work is pretty standard. I am either at the pole studio - working on my strength, at the gym or the beach.
I love going for coffee and hunting out new vegan restaurants or cafes to eat at. I enjoy spending time with my partner Jayden (he’s the better half of course), walking my pig Archie and hanging out with my two French Bulldogs.
Q) What is your favourite part of working at Youth Lab?
This is a really hard one…
Being surrounded by beautiful, intelligent, supportive women (and Jon) on a daily basis. I really feel the team has it all - beauty and brains. We have such an awesome little tight-knit gang and such a beautiful little work home. Everything about the Youth Lab space is pure luxe.
I am very lucky to have some of the most superior skin technologies, skin treatments, injectable products and cosmeceutical skin care right at my little finger tips.
I am not going to lie though, this can also potentially be a negative of working in such an amazing space, as both myself and my bank account have very little self control.
“I enjoy spending time with my partner Jayden (he’s the better half of course), walking my pig Archie and hanging out with my two French Bulldogs”.
Q) What treatment do you see becoming popular this year?
The rise in male cosmetic treatments! I see Masculinisation injectables being the new-norm for 2019. This treatment involves strategically placing dermal filler into the face to enhance specific male facial attributes, the ones which make men appear more attractive such as structured cheeks, chiseled chins and strong masculine jawlines.
Q) What is the one piece of skin advise you wish all your clients would follow?
That a combination approach is always the best approach!
Yes, dermal filler and wrinkle relaxers are the gold standard to plump, smooth and re-volumise. However, addressing skin quality is just as/if not more important. When you consider what makes a person appear youthful, it is not entirely a smooth, plump face. It’s that youthful glow and even skin tone. Cosmeceutical grade Skincare deserves a little more credit. The treatments I offer in clinic will get you some amazing results, but it is the skincare which keeps those results long lasting.
At the VERY least, a good quality Cosmeceutical grade Cleanser, Retinol and an SPF 50+/30+ minimum. No less!
